Apex Oaks Assisted Living and Memory Care Moving boxes for senior housing
How can I move mom out of her home? I've heard unsettling stories of places. Are these the things you’re saying right now because you’re faced with a decision you aren’t prepared to deal with? Let's face it, making a decision for your parent or loved one is not something that any of us planned or set out to do.
It can be very intimidating and difficult to weed through all of the possible senior care communities out there. There are so many choices and all of them offer a variety of different attractions, it can be challenging to know where to start.
As you begin your search, two important things to consider will be the location of the community and your budget. Your budget should include all services to care for the needs of your loved one including items such as toiletries and personal items. You’ll also want to consider whether your loved one will thrive at a location where there are busy hallways or would a much simpler floor plan work better. This will help you determine whether they are better suited for a large scale or a small-scale community. Each has merits and this will help you narrow the search down quite a bit.
Additionally, you should consider what is most important to your loved one such as social activities, food, outings, etc. Along with your budget, make a list of all the things that will be most important to keep in mind during your search.
Now that you have your criteria the search begins. Start with location and break things down from there. A community’s website and Facebook page should give you the most information with pictures and events showing interaction between the residents as well as the list of specialties they offer.
After reviewing what you find online, further narrow the list to select 3-5 communities that best match your needs. The community visits are where you can see firsthand the interaction of staff with residents including the administrator or person touring you. Keep in mind that the person touring you may have to stop momentarily—a resident in need should always come first. Staff should be friendly and approachable. Lastly, the overall feel of the community should click with you or it may not be the right place.
The caregiving journey isn’t always an easy one, but it can be very rewarding. Take the necessary time to get to know each community you are considering and don’t hesitate to visit more than once. It’s worth the time knowing your loved one is safe, comfortable and happy in their new senior community.
