Insurgent
I bought my ticket at First Colony AMC and was headed toward little Theatre #3 far down the hall when I realized that I did not have 3D glasses. So I ran back to the front desk to get my 3D glasses. Okay, I walked hurriedly.
We all know the complications of a middle child; I'm an example. What about the middle-novel syndrome? It's not only complicated, it's treacherous if not handled properly. "Insurgent" is the second book in the trilogy by American author Veronica Roth. She sold millions of her books including three to me. Ms. Roth was born in 1988; bravo to her brilliance and success at such an early age.
"Divergent" is the first novel which takes place in a futuristic and dystopian vision of Chicago where people are separated by their traits and personalities in order to control people and supposedly to promote peace. Young Roth clearly understood that power in the hands of a few is dangerous.
Tris Prior (Shailene "Descendants" Woodley) is our hero and it seems clear that Veronica Roth was making a point about Women's Lib; not that there's anything wrong with that. Woodley, who was born in 1991, is a great Tris and personifies the physically strong, pretty, intelligent, and sensitive young woman that Roth had in mind. She is the big winner in this three-movie series even though this movie is not a winner.
The cinematography and music are spectacular, but can't carry a meandering script that fatefully does not appear to have a meaningful beginning or ending. Oh, to be that middle child; I mean book. Oops, I mean middle movie.
The direction by Robert Schwentke lacked clarity and good story-telling. The screenplay was seemingly intimidated by the first installment and was not bold enough to allow "Insurgent" to stand on its own two movie feet. The young cast did the best they could with a movie that was a big-budget mess.
Better luck next time and there will be a next time. The third novel "Allegiant" will be made into two movies, Part 1 and Part 2, set to be released in 2016 and 2017. Oh, Boy, I can hardly wait. Rock 'n Roll.
